What Is Neuropsychological Assessment?

Neuropsychological assessment is a powerful tool for understanding how the brain affects behavior, learning, emotions, and daily functioning. At Northcoast Psychology, our comprehensive evaluations provide a detailed picture of cognitive strengths and weaknesses — helping patients, families, and referring providers make informed decisions about diagnosis, treatment, academic or workplace accommodations, and long-term care planning.

A comprehensive assessment may help clarify concerns such as:

  • Attention and concentration difficulties
  • Memory loss or cognitive changes
  • Academic struggles or giftedness
  • Emotional or behavioral regulation challenges
  • Executive functioning or decision-making issues
  • Concerns following injury, illness, or neurological conditions

Our approach integrates in-depth clinical interviewing, standardized psychological and neurocognitive testing, collateral input when appropriate, and a thorough review of relevant records. We tailor each evaluation to the individual — whether you're seeking diagnostic clarity, academic accommodations, treatment planning, or support for a loved one navigating complex challenges.

Common Reasons for Referral

We provide neuropsychological assessments for individuals age 4 and up, offering clear answers when concerns about thinking, learning, or behavior arise. Whether you are a parent seeking academic support for your child, an adult looking for diagnostic clarity, or a professional referring a patient or employee, our evaluations are tailored to deliver actionable insights that guide next steps in care, education, or workplace performance.

  • Difficulty with attention, organization, or task completion (e.g., ADHD or executive functioning concerns)

  • Learning challenges, giftedness, or questions about academic potential

  • Memory loss or cognitive changes related to aging, illness, or injury

  • Emotional regulation concerns, mood swings, or behavioral changes

  • Difficulties following concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, or neurological illness

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults

  • Dementia assessments and age-related cognitive evaluations

  • Complex presentations needing diagnostic clarification (e.g., overlapping or unclear conditions)

  • Academic accommodations (IEPs, 504 plans, extended time for testing)

  • Evaluation of decision-making capacity, guardianship, or other legal questions

  • Workplace assessments, including EQ-i (emotional intelligence), performance evaluations, and leadership readiness

Each evaluation combines clinical expertise, evidence-based testing, and clear recommendations — giving you answers you can trust and a roadmap for what comes next.

What to Expect During Your Assessment

A neuropsychological assessment is a structured, supportive process designed to provide clear answers and a practical path forward. Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1:

    Diagnostic
    Interview

A 60-minute session conducted remotely or in person. We review your medical, psychological, educational, and occupational history, may include collateral interviews (with your consent), and determine the appropriate testing plan.

  • Step 2:

    Testing
    Sessions

A combination of remote and in-person testing, scheduled in focused 2-hour blocks. The number of sessions depends on your specific needs.

  • Step 3:

    Initial Data
    Interpretation

Your psychologist reviews test results and any additional records as needed to ensure an accurate, individualized understanding of your results.

  • Step 4:

    Feedback
    Session

We meet with you to explain your results in detail, answer questions, and provide a clear diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

  • Step 5:

    Comprehensive
    Report

Within 1–4 weeks, you will receive a detailed written report with your results, diagnosis, and recommendations. With your permission, we can securely share it with schools, medical providers, or other professionals.

Our goal is to make every step clear and supportive — so you leave with not only a diagnosis but a plan.
